First, in case you haven’t heard of him, “Dr. Beach” (a.k.a. Dr. Stephen Leatherman) knows his beaches. Since 1991, the Florida International University environmental studies professor and world-renowned, coastal expert has issued an annual top ten list of the best beaches in America.
When Dr. Beach released his 2007 rankings, three Florida beaches made his Top 10 Beaches list: (#2 - Caladesi Island State Park in Clearwater), (#9 - Lighthouse Point Park in Daytona Beach) and (#10 - Siesta Beach in Sarasota).
Caladesi Island is one of only a few completely natural islands along the Gulf Coast of Florida. To enjoy its white sand shores, you’ll have to take a boat or ferry from Honeymoon Island State Park. Besides swimming, sunning and beachcombing, visitors can fish, hike a three-mile nature trail or paddle a three-mile kayak trail through the mangroves and bay. The park also offers picnic areas, bathhouses and a park concession.
In Ponce Inlet, a quaint town just south of Daytona Beach, you’ll find Lighthouse Point Park. This unique, 52-acre park features a lighthouse that is historical monument, look-out point and museum, a popular fishing pier and pristine beaches. On its nature trails, hikers may see raccoons, possum, skunks, armadillos, shore birds and birds of prey.
Located just offshore of the Sarasota mainland is an eight-mile-long barrier island called Siesta Key. Its public beach, Siesta Beach, has earned several distinctions for the fine, white quality of its sand. With its many amenities - tennis and volleyball courts, shaded playground and picnic area, concession stands, shallow water near shore and a lifeguard on-duty year-round - this beach is a popular destination for families.
Once a beach reaches the #1 spot on the list, the location is officially retired from the survey. Five Florida beaches have earned this recognition since Dr. Beach first published his list:
