Columbus Georgia: Progress and Preservation

The city of Columbus, Georgia is located on the western border of the state, 95 miles southwest of Atlanta in Muscogee County. Situated at the end of the navigable portion of the Chattahoochee River, the city was named after the famous navigator, Christopher Columbus.  With 188,465 residents, Columbus is the third largest city in Georgia and its larger metropolitan area with 288,847 people is the fourth largest MSA in the state.

In 1971, the governments of Muscogee County and the city of Columbus consolidated, forming the first consolidated government in the state of Georgia.  The Columbus metropolitan area encompasses all of Muscogee County, the military installation at Fort Benning, and Chattahoochee, Harris, and Marion counties in Georgia, as well as Russell County in Alabama.

Just across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus is Phenix City, Alabama, named in 1889 for the Eagle & Phenix Mill in Columbus.  Horace King, a slave and master bridge builder, built the first bridge connecting Columbus with Phenix City.  Today, there continues to be a strong connection and interaction between the residents of these twin cities as co-workers, business partners and military personnel.

By the year 2011, Columbus will experience a surge in growth as the Armor Center and School, currently located at Ft. Knox in Kentucky, relocates to Fort Benning.  Almost 10,000 new military and civilian jobs will be created as a result, and most will live off base in the community.  Community leaders are preparing for the influx of growth and its impact on community services, transportation and the school system.

Columbus Georgia New Home Destination

Why put Columbus on your list of potential places to relocate?  It’s a family-friendly city.  America’s Promise Alliance selected the city of Columbus one of America’s 100 Best Communities for Young People in 2007.

It’s an affordable place to live.  The cost of living is 17.2% less than the national average, and housing costs are more than 27% less than the national average, with the median cost of  Columbus homes at $157,300 compared to the national average of $217,200.  Columbus homes for sale vary from uptown residences, restored antebellum and Victorian-style homes in the historic district, loft-style living along the Chattahoochee River, single-family homes in one of the the city’s new home communities, or the option of a custom-built home a bit further out from the city with enough acreage for horses and gardens.  Whatever your preference, Columbus has new homes to accommodate your needs.

As home to headquarters for insurer AFLAC (a Fortune 500 company) and financial services company Synovus (in the Fortune 1000), TSYS - a credit card processing company, Carmike Cinemas - a movie theatre corporation, and the military base at Fort Benning, the economy of Columbus is growing and adding job opportunities.

As the city grows, it is determined to honor its past.  Columbus showcases its past through the preservation of its 26-block historic district, the largest contiguous historical district in Georgia, its museums and attractions.

The Chattahoochee River is both integral to the history of Columbus and instrumental in its growth.  Initially the area served as one of the Indians’ most extensive trading posts, then later, entrepreneurs harnessed the river’s power and Columbus became one of the first and largest mill towns in the South.  In 1918, Columbus became a military town with the creation of Camp Benning (which later became Fort Benning).

In the 1960s, leaders worked to diversify the economy and bring culture to Columbus.  By 2000, through private and public funding, the city revitalized its original downtown and the river has once again become its most distinctive feature.  Now, the 15-mile RiverWalk is a center for recreational activities and the focus of one of one of the top 20 events in the Southeast - Riverfest - held the last full weekend in April.

Columbus is home to many cultural, artistic and historical venues.  The Springer Opera House, circa 1871, is a National Historic Landmark and continues as a working theatre and the State Theatre of Georgia.  The Rivercenter for the Performing Arts is the centerpiece of the city’s arts and entertainment district, home to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and host to many world-renowned performers and entertainers.  The Columbus Museum houses American decorative and fine art spanning nearly 300 years, covers the history of the Chattahoochee Valley and Transformations, and features many rotating art and history exhibits and a hands-on kids’ gallery.

If you’re looking to relocate to a distinctive, family-friendly city in the South with an affordable cost of living, a growing economy, a variety of housing options and recreational and cultural opportunities, Columbus, Georgia would be a great place to look for new homes for sale.
